Bridging

the Education &

Opportunity Gap

We believe that all young people, regardless of background, have a right to a quality education and support in fulfilling their potential. Education is a critical factor in future employment opportunities and reaching goals in life, and youth whose families can’t provide the same level of investment, support, and connections are less likely to graduate high school and are even less likely to pursue – and complete – post-secondary education.

This gap is more than just educational. It’s a gap in opportunity across an array of areas: access to out-of-school support systems, proper coaching, and guidance for post-secondary support while the student is still in high school, and resources to effectively turn a post-secondary certification into a well-paying job. Each component is needed to ensure that a graduate can secure a more prosperous future, enabling them to break the entrenched intergenerational cycle of poverty facing so many families today.

  • CodePath is reprogramming higher education to create the most diverse generation of engineers, CTOs, and founders. They deliver industry-vetted courses and career support centered on the needs of Black, Latino/a, Indigenous, and low-income students. Their students train with senior engineers, intern at top companies, and rise together to become the tech leaders of tomorrow.

With over 26,000 students and alumni from 600 colleges now working at 2,000 companies, they are reshaping the tech workforce and the industries of the future.

  • We’re inspired by the CodePath team, led by Michael Ellison, and their approach to creating tangible opportunities within the post-secondary system. By bridging BIPOC and/or low-income students to high-paying engineering and coding jobs, CodePath has found a powerful niche for creating high-impact results at scale, making a real difference in the lives of underrepresented students.

  • Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) increases the number of young men of color from Northern California and the Bay Area to attend and graduate from colleges and universities. Their programming, services, and 12-year commitment produce outcomes that make participants more likely to meet requirements, graduate, and pursue their passions.

  • We are impressed with the proximate experience of the two founders (both named Michael) and their desire to pave a new path forward for the young men growing up in the same, and similar, communities as their own. Having proven their model in the Sacramento area, we are excited by the unique opportunity to help catalyze and solidify their expansion into the East Bay, which started in the 2022/2023 school year.

The Avalon Academy

  • They are a school based in the Bay Area dedicated to providing exceptional educational services to children with movement disorders such as cerebral palsy.

  • Ann has been a passionate advocate for disabled youth, and we learned about Avalon through a family friend who has a daughter who attends the school. Ann was asked to serve on the Board and has been incredibly impressed with the expertise and passion of the leadership and staff at the school.

  • FabNewport envisions a future where all youth possess the necessary skills, confidence, and commitment to make a positive impact on their communities and realize their future aspirations. They bridge the gap between youth and their positive visions through mentorship and year-round slate of activities and classes throughout Newport County, Rhode Island.

  • We’re proud to support FabNewport for their unique approach to education that reaches beyond traditional classrooms, engaging young people through their own interests and natural curiosities. By reimagining learning as a personalized, experiential journey, FabNewport empowers kids to explore new ideas, build skills, and discover their potential in real-world contexts. Their unique model is reshaping how young people connect with education and their communities, inspiring a love of learning that lasts a lifetime.

  • Last Mile Education Fund invests in a broad group of students already committed to technology and engineering fields, providing support for challenges they face beyond their control, and incubating them to be the next generation of innovators. They see these students as a high return on investment opportunity to address the diversity challenges plaguing the tech industry and increase economic mobility for women and minorities.

  • When we came across the world of the Last Mile Education Fund, we knew we had discovered something unique. So many organizations strive to provide scholarships to help first-generation students get into college, but few focus on the key financial barriers in time that might prevent a young woman from completing that degree in her final semester(s). We believe this is a low-barrier way to have an outsized impact on thousands of young women over time.
