Protecting

the Environment

To manage our planet’s climate, we must effectively eliminate greenhouse emissions. Zero global net emissions needs to be our collective goal or global warming will continue. Climate models suggest we have, at most, three decades to achieve this. While the warming will be gradual, the longer we wait, the harder it will be to achieve this goal, as some greenhouse gases can last up to 10,000 years in the atmosphere. What’s more, we are already seeing an impact in the catastrophic effects of a changing climate with intensifying wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and accelerated animal extinction.

Our Impact Partners in this portfolio attack distinct parts of this crisis, but share a common approach which is innovative, scalable, and focused on realistic solutions. Knowing that our grants in this space will be a drop of water in the proverbial ocean of climate change, we seek out opportunities where our commitments can have an outsized impact.

  • Megafire Action is a non-profit organization urgently building policy solutions to eliminate catastrophic fires. The modern wildfire crisis is overwhelming our systems, and the time to act is now. The good news is, this is a problem of our making, and we have the power to fix it.  Megafire Action supports mechanisms that facilitate a return to healthy forests and ecosystems, promoting innovation that will assess risk across landscapes and jurisdictions in the United States, and better inform our efforts to reduce risks nationwide. It also involves reforming how agencies operate so they can effectively carry out their duties. Megafire Action is mobilizing education to create the enabling conditions for success, and eliminate the age of megafire.

  • We chose to grant to US MegaFire Action due to the urgent need to address the increasing frequency and intensity of megafires, which release devastating amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. We are particularly impressed with the founder, Matt, whose leadership and passion make him the ideal person to raise awareness and drive critical action at this pivotal moment.

  • Rewiring America is the leading electrification non-profit, focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities. They develop accessible, actionable data and tools, and build coalitions and partnerships to make going electric easier for households and communities. Rewiring America helps Americans save money, tackle nationwide emissions goals, improve health, and build the next generation of the clean energy workforce.

  • We like the bold ambitions of Rewiring America, and they have just skyrocketed since the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, which included millions for electrification initiatives. The team is experienced in industry, policy, and non-profits and brings together a unique set of skills and relationships to make a significant dent in this important aspect of reducing carbon emissions in the future.

  • The Nature Conservancy is tackling the dual threats of accelerated climate change and unprecedented biodiversity loss. Science determines where they focus and equity guides how they achieve lasting results. Grounded by decades of local on-the-ground experience, they maximize their ability to affect change by bringing together real-world solutions, policy expertise, sustainable financing and collaborative partnerships.

  • We chose to support The Nature Conservancy because of their commitment to pioneering innovative solutions for environmental challenges. Their robust organizational structure allows them to swiftly scale successful projects, making a lasting impact. We've chosen to support a pilot project focusing on oyster restoration in northern California — a perfect example of their ability to enhance ocean ecosystems through tested and scalable approaches.

  • Their mission is to prevent the sixth mass extinction (and the first human-created one). They are applying technology, entrepreneurship, and open innovation to source, develop, and scale critical solutions to the underlying drivers of extinction.

  • We couldn’t think of two founders better positioned to lead an organization that is working to inspire, cultivate, and mentor the next generation of innovators working on climate conservation. Alex and Paul have decades of experience working directly on conservation efforts, on launching prizes, and inspiring action. Now they are joining forces to help stave off the sixth mass extinction and we are proud to support these important efforts.

  • Hourglass is a non-profit research organization that brings together interdisciplinary scientists to conduct targeted, integrated, and independent model, laboratory, and field research that rapidly de-risks the key uncertainties on how to safely and effectively scale mineral-based OAE techniques.

They publish all of their research, and in turn, provide the public with transparent and informed knowledge with which to make decisions about this class of climate solutions.

  • We are thrilled to support Hourglass Climate, inspired by the innovative and creative thinking that Grace and her team bring to this urgent problem. Their commitment to tackling climate change through creative, responsible, and ethical innovations, paired with a vision for scalable impact, makes them a standout leader in this critical global effort.

  • Hinged on the values of community building, knowledge creation, and converting ideas into action through accessible funding, Homeworld Collective is the go-to source for talented scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, and funders committed to maximizing the impact of climate biotechnology for planetary health.

  • We chose to grant to Homeworld Collective because we appreciate their community-first approach, which fosters collaboration across researchers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders, enabling the rapid advancement of groundbreaking ideas. By focusing on developing the social, intellectual, and funding infrastructure necessary for climate biotech to thrive, Homeworld Collective is paving the way for transformative technologies that can significantly impact planetary health. We can't wait to see what they create!
